Although I would love to look amazing all the time... I'd love to have muscles, I'd love to have hair that I could style, I'd live to wear fashionable clothes, it’s too much effort for minimal results.
That was my attitude a few weeks ago.... when I was single. Now I’m seeing someone, I am so fussy about how I look what I wear and how my hair is styled; I’m even trying to tone up my body. It leads me to think that the reasons for male and female body self image are very different.
I was chatting to someone mildly famous the other day about this very subject. He said that since he started on the Radio and has done a small amount of TV work, he has to think about his appearance more and more. Like me he was content to let it all hang out and only look presentable when he needed to, but now his career is taking off, his image is something that he has to look after.
I think this might be another one of those things that sets men and women apart. I think women’s body image hang-ups are about self confidence; to be able to wear this outfit or stand out in that crowd, whereas I think men do it to 1. impress girls and 2. Enhance their status, whether that’s looking smart at work or being a model or celebrity. I know that the male and female ven diagrams will intersect but I do believe that the origins of their body image hang-ups come from differing positions.
The channel 4 show I mentioned is crazy but unmissable TV.
Equally unmissable is a new podcast I’ve got into by a group of girls; one of which runs a Fashion Blog; www.shareyourstyle.wordpress.com Share Your Style Poscast is available from iTunes & Podomatic and you can follow it on twitter @shareyourstyle and its creator @sarahies
